Suicide

According to the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health, suicide is the ninth leading cause of death in the United States, and perhaps most tragically is the third leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 24.

This page concentrates on suicide by persons who are not terminally ill. The decision to end one's life when death is approaching anyway is sometimes called self-deliverance or voluntary euthanasia and is sometimes assisted by other persons; references to those topics appear on our death with dignity page.

If you are feeling suicidal right now, please tell someone. Before making an irrevocable choice, you owe it to yourself to talk about it with someone else. To locate a suicide prevention service in your community, just call your telephone operator and ask for the number. These anonymous, non-judgmental services are standing by to help you think through your situation and identify options.
